Jenna & Matthew met in Maryland at UMD and through out their student career were able to not only find a safe haven in each other but also build a charming and strong bond that would last long after their time in school. Now having moved out of Maryland, they sought out someone who could represent those little, but very important steps, that got them this special moment.

So with this important task ahead of us we decided it was best to begin right at the center of where it all started, University of Maryland.

By the time we were done in the river, all of us were exhausted and wet—and totally satisfied. The only way to make it even better… Ice Cream!

It was about as inspiring as I could have asked for, but even more importantly, Kyle & Whitney carried all the inspiration we needed. The setting was cool, no doubt, but Kyle & Whitney’s honest affection was what really ended up making the images worthwhile.

Kyle & Whitney were married just a couple weeks ago. So keep an eye out for some images from their wedding!

After spending a fair amount of time on the more thematic stuff, we also spent some time capturing the more traditional engagement photos alos—you know, the two of them being cute.

We chose to process these images into soft, warm colors because, well, it was just so darn appropriate for this beautiful day and happy couple.

Though it’s difficult to take photographs inside the conservatories at Brookside Gardens, someone must have been feeling very generous because they allowed us to spend a good fifteen minutes there before we moved on to the next spot.

We also happened to be there on the same day as a Montgomery County School’s field trip. Caitlin is a public school teacher and with a little smooth talk between me and the bus-driver we were able sneak onto the bus and grab a shot of the two of them.

Whitney & David contacted me to shoot their engagement photographs. They wanted something that reflected their lives at the beginning of their relationship. After some brainstorming, we settled on the Washington DC Metro. The Orange Line to be specific. They both live and work in DC and the metro is something both of them see all the time. It was a natural choice.

The shoot was not without it’s challenges, however. Selecting a time of day that was not ripe with riders was the first challenge. The second challenge was actually meeting each other on time. All three parties were coming from different parts of the district and attempting to meet all in the same place at the same time via metro car. The challenge resulted in one reschedule, but we nailed it on the second try.

These photographs were shot on the DC Metro utilizing almost entirely natural light and the occasional help of a speedlight when necessary.
