The Full Wedding Photography Process

Below you will find my unabridged wedding photography process, from when you first reach out all the way until I deliver your finished images. I’m on top of this, every step of the way.

Reach out to say hello

Send me an email, give me a call, or shoot me a text message. I promise I won’t bite. I’ll reply promptly, usually within a few hours. I’ll field any questions you might have, and I’ll ask you some questions of my own in order help establish whether we’re the right fit for one another.

Get Booked

8 to 14 Months Before Your Wedding Day

If you’re feeling good, and I’m feeling good, the next step is to secure your wedding date so that someone else doesn’t get it first. I will send you a digital agreement to look over and sign, and then I will collect 50% of your package price. That’s it, you’re done with booking!

Hold Your Engagement Session

6 to 12 Months Before Your Wedding Day

If your package includes an engagement session (and they usually do), or you added one to hourly coverage, we can set that up right away. Or, if you’re not ready for that yet, you can tell me when you would like to circle back around to talk about it. Engagement sessions can be held on any date I have available up until the day before your wedding.

Engagement Photos Are Edited & Delivered

10 to 14 days after your engagement session

It will take me a week or two to work through your engagement photos, pick the best, and edit them in a way that compliments the images themselves. When the images are ready you will receive a link to a private gallery online with around 50-100 images, as well as a link to download the high resolution files which can be used for save the dates, invitations and wedding websites.

Give Me All the Details You Have About Your Wedding Day

6 to 8 weeks before your wedding

Once most of the big decisions for your wedding day have been made I’ll will send you a wedding discovery form which will help me gather all of the little details I’ll need to carefully plan your wedding day coverage and create a highly detailed photography timeline for your wedding day. If you have a wedding planner, I would love to get them involved in this process!

Get On The Phone to Review Our Coverage Plan Together

4 to 6 weeks before your wedding

When I have a draft of your photography coverage timeline, I’ll invite you to take a look and offer some feedback before we set up a phone call where we can chat in detail about any adjustments or special considerations we need to make, as well as anything you might need to do to help make sure the plan succeeds.

The Wedding Day

The day has finally come!

On the wedding day I’ll arrive a little bit early to look around and make some creative decisions, then when coverage begins we’ll follow our plan throughout the day and use high-level priorities lists to adapt to any unexpected changes that might arise. Congratulations, you’re married!

Images Are Backed Up

1 day after your wedding

Securely backing up the images captured on your wedding day is one of the most important steps I’ll take. The images will be stored in three separate places to make sure there is redundancy in the unlikely event of a disaster.

Images Are Surveyed

1 to 7 days after your wedding

I will come home from your wedding having captured a ton of images. Several thousand, probably. Most of them will be redundant of one another, some of them will be unflattering, and a few of them will simply not have work for one technical reason or another. During the image survey, I will get a clearer sense of everything we captured on your wedding day, I will choose some preview images to send you, and I will start to experiment with my stylistic approach to your unique images.

Previews Are Ready!

10 to 14 days after your wedding

After the survey is complete and I have mostly settled on how to best edit your wedding day, I will send you a set of 30 to 50 high resolution preview images which you can use right away for thank you cards, prints, gifts, social media, or whatever else you like.

Editing is Underway

3 to 7 days after your wedding

Your images will be edited in four phases. The first phase deals with culling the images to find the best. I’ll remove redundant and unflattering images, as well as images with poor technical execution. The next phases will deal with high-level edits for style that compliments your unique wedding, while maintaining a mostly true to life representation of color tone. The final phase will deal with areas that need special attention, for example, closed eyes in important family portraits or removing a prominent blemish on a wedding dress in key images. The final phase will deal with color consistency to help achieve a tonal consistency from one image to the next.

Your Full Gallery is Ready!

4 to 8 weeks after your wedding day

All the waiting is over and you will receive a notification in your email that your images are ready. You’ll be able to view the images right away in your private online gallery where you can share with friends and order prints. You will also be given a link to download the high resolution images directly to your computer for safe keeping and printing on your own.

Couples hire me because they want someone who can create beautiful images under pressure, help keep the day on track, and make them feel comfortable throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you only interested in couples with big budgets?

No. While most people spend between around $2,500 to $4,500, my clients come with a wide range of budgets. My goal is to find a connection, and your budget is secondary to that. You can read my candid thoughts on pricing here.

  • How do you plan?

I work with you to design a wedding photography timeline that includes the who, what, when, where and why, while respecting the often fluid nature of a wedding day. This will include identifying key moments and people, and developing a strategy to capture what’s important to you without overwhelming your natural experience of the day.

  • How far in advance should we book?

I recommend that you book your wedding photography 10 months to one year in advance of your wedding day. Last minute bookings are occasionally available though, so don’t hesitate to ask!

  • How long before the images are finished?

Unlike many photographers, I am not just slapping a filter on the images and hitting send, therefore editing can take a little longer. The average turn around time for wedding photos is 4 to 8 weeks. It is sometimes quicker than this, and occasionally a little longer for weddings that pose unique technical challenges. I will always keep you in the loop when facing a delay.

  • How many images are included? Is there a limit?

Since every wedding is different, it’s not possible to determine with certainty how many images will be delivered, but there is no limit. In general, a team of two photographers will create around 100-150 images per hour.

  • How would you describe your style?

Depending on my client’s preferences, I shoot a blend of candid photojournalism, polished editorial, and traditional portraiture. My work has an unvarnished and authentic quality, presented primarily in true-to-life color, with key moments punctuated in classic black and white.

  • Will you help with posing?

Yup, if you need it. I don’t want to get in the way when something natural is already working, but I also don’t want to leave you there wondering what to do with your hands when it’s not.

  • Will you travel? How much?

I’ve photographed weddings across the United States and internationally, and love the adventure of discovering a new city. I always keep my passport up to date, so I can go wherever your wedding is taking place. If you’re interested in bringing me along, reach out and I’ll be happy to discuss what’s involved in the process.
