Family Portraits at the Beautiful Bartholdi Gardens in Washington DC

I’ve been working with Joe and Melissa for nearly a decade now, capturing family portraits with their two boys almost every year. They are true urbanites. They love to explore the city, learn the history, challenge their own ideas, and take in new experiences. As a result, one of the things I love about working with them is how they’re always looking to utilize some new space for their portraits, and they are often spaces that I have never even heard of.

We originally wanted to visit the Botanical Gardens, but what do you know, there’s this whole pandemic thing and we’ve got to keep some distance and stay outside. Plus… Well, it’s closed. So, we started to brainstorm other ideas, and came up with Bartholdi Gardens, which just so happens to be right across the street.

The gardens aren’t huge, but they are tidy, stunningly manicured and full of nooks, crannies and beautiful angles on the Botanical Garden’s glass dome and the capitol building. It’s also within a few minutes walk of some very different aesthetics with the National Museum of the American Indian and Department of Health & Human Services buildings right across the street.
