About  Glen Echo Park

Located in Glen Echo, Maryland, Glen Echo Park is a picturesque and historic site that has evolved from a Chautauqua retreat in the late 19th century to a premier arts and cultural center today. Established in 1891, the park originally served as a retreat for educational and cultural programs, emphasizing the importance of art, literature, and science. In 1911, the site transformed into an amusement park, drawing crowds with its attractions, rides, and vibrant carnival atmosphere. The park continued operations until 1968, after which it was repurposed as a unique arts and education center in 1971.

Glen Echo Park, now managed by the National Park Service and the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, stands out as a popular destination for artists, photographers, and families. With its rich history, beautiful architecture, and nostalgic charm, it’s no wonder that it has become a favorite spot for portrait sessions.

What makes Glen Echo Park a prime location for portraits is its delightful blend of historic structures and enchanting surroundings. The park is home to the iconic Dentzel Carousel, a beautifully restored 1921 antique carousel that has captivated the hearts of visitors for generations. The Spanish Ballroom, another noteworthy structure, showcases an exquisite Art Deco style with its distinctive red and yellow color scheme and intricate architectural details. The park also features several other eye-catching buildings, such as the Bumper Car Pavilion and the Cuddle Up Pavilion, which add to the enchanting setting.

Photographers and their subjects are sure to be inspired by the park’s interesting signage and carnival marketplace atmosphere, reminiscent of a bygone era. This unique ambiance allows for captivating portraits with a sense of whimsy and nostalgia. The lush greenery and serene Potomac River nearby provide stunning natural backdrops, further enhancing the park’s charm.

Professional photography at Glen Echo Park requires a permit from the National Park Service (NPS), with a non-refundable application fee of $90 and potentially a $50 location fee. Any photography by professionals, including weddings and engagements, is considered commercial under NPS regulations. For shoots inside the carousel or Spanish Ballroom, a separate fee of $150/hour is charged by the Glen Echo Park Partnership. Photo shoots on park grounds only, without access to indoor locations, do not incur an additional fee from the Partnership, but the NPS permit is still required. Allow at least four business days for permit processing.
