The Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County in Annapolis, Maryland is a historic and picturesque location for couples looking to exchange vows in a civil marriage ceremony. Built in 1903, the courthouse is a stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the heart of downtown Annapolis, the courthouse is a popular tourist destination and has been featured in several movies and television shows, including “The Practice” and “The Wire.”

One of the benefits of holding a civil marriage ceremony at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County is the convenience of being able to obtain a marriage license and schedule a ceremony time all in one location. The process is straightforward: couples can apply for a marriage license at the courthouse and then schedule a ceremony time with the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Ceremonies are typically held on weekdays during business hours. Additionally, the courthouse offers a unique and historic backdrop for wedding photos. The courthouse chapel itself is also quaint a elegant, and provides beautiful natural light, as well as excellent opportunities for photographers to use flash lighting to produce big, soft shadows.

However, there are some challenges to holding a civil marriage ceremony at the courthouse. For example, ceremony guests are limited to a maximum of 18 people with no exceptions, and there may only be a few short moments available to take photos in the courthouse chapel after the ceremony. Couples may want to consider alternative locations nearby for portraits with friends and family once the ceremony is finished, such as Acton Cove and Downtown Annapolis.

It’s important to note that in Maryland, holding a civil ceremony in the courthouse is not required. Once a marriage license has been obtained, anyone may officiate your wedding in any location of your choosing. However, for couples who appreciate the history and beauty of the courthouse, it can be a wonderful location to exchange vows and begin their new life together.

Location Limitations:

Strictly no more than 18 guests, including your photographer. No more than 2-4 minutes, at most, for portraits inside the courthouse chapel, and on busy days you may be rushed out of the chapel immediately. The chapel space is also very small, dramatically limiting the options your photographer has for angles of your nuptials.
